Let’s Not Forget These Early Days of 2018 (The Good Ones, Anyway)

29 Jun

It’s hard to believe, but it was just last week that James Corden shared his awesome “Carpool Karaoke” video with Paul McCartney with the world.

Less than a month and a half ago, we were all fighting about whether we heard “Laurel” or “Yanny.” (It’s Yanny. No question.)

Two and a half months ago, Desiree Linden won the Boston Marathon women’s race, by more than four minutes — even after stopping just over an hour into the race to wait while Shalane Flanagan went to the bathroom.

Less than three weeks before that, Brandon Victor Dixon’s performance blew us away in the live TV production of Jesus Christ Superstar.

Black Panther, easily the best movie so far this year, came out just four months ago.

And a month before that, we were all cheering when the Minnesota Vikings staged an incredible comeback in the last minute of an NFL playoff game. (Unless you were a New Orleans Saints fan, that is.)

Yes, all of that happened this year. Continue reading

My Niece Is Turning 10 Years Old Today. Why Can’t She Stay Young Forever?

4 May

On a recent visit to New York, it got to be that time, and my sister asked my niece, Abby, who she wanted to put her to sleep that night. With minimal hesitation, Abby responded, “Uncle.”

So up we went, and after a bit of her customary procrastination — she had to rearrange her stuff, she had to check out her fish, she had to put stuff away, she had to change from shorts into pants, then change back again, etc. etc. etc. — she got into bed. Continue reading

My Favorite Part of This Past Weekend

3 Jan

kids holding handsMy niece and nephews (as well as my sister and brother-in-law) were in Boston this past weekend.

We had a really fun time. It was a great way to end the year.

The six of us managed to pack a lot of stuff into the three days, especially given the snow storm on Saturday, and when they left on Monday afternoon, the three kids apparently fell right to sleep in the car.

That’s one sign of a good weekend.

For the Kids

26 Jul

When my niece, Abby, was born, my sister and brother-in-law told me they were committed to visiting Boston twice a year so that I could be more a part of her life, and so she could see where I live.

They’ve done just that.

Now that I have two nephews, the same philosophy holds true.

And this weekend, the boys — and their sister and their parents — came to visit me.

Like Abby’s first visit, it was a low-key weekend, but that doesn’t mean we didn’t have fun. Continue reading

You’re Sleeping Your Lives Away

4 Apr

Dear Marc and Ian,

I know how tough it must be to be two months old.

After all, I was a baby once too, and I lived through it with your big sister, Abby.

All you do is sleep, eat, cry, and poop, over and over again. Without even saying what you want, people pamper you and attend to your every need.

Yes, I know. It’s very hard work, and that’s why you’re always sleeping.

But I have to tell you, boys: sleeping all the time means you’re missing out on some really cool stuff. Continue reading

They’re Here!

30 Jan

Unless it’s, you know, a booty call or something, you never want the phone to ring after 12 a.m. Especially if you’ve been out, and you’re, well, not sober. Because when people call after midnight, it’s usually not for a good reason.

But sometimes the phone rings after midnight for a good reason. A very good reason. Continue reading

Twice Is Nice

14 Sep

Minnesota has them. Doublemint has them. Jennifer Lopez has them. The Olsen family has them too. And in March, so will my sister and brother-in-law.

That’s right: I’m going to be an uncle again — and again — because my sister is pregnant with twins! Identical ones. Continue reading

Only One Word to Describe It

6 Sep

They say a picture’s worth a thousand words, but if you ask me, there’s only one word that comes to mind when I see this photo: Happiness, both in front of and behind the camera. Continue reading

Being an Uncle Isn’t All Good

21 Jun

They say there’s no downside to being an uncle.

You can play with a kid, get him or her all riled up, laugh, always be on his or her good side, etc … and then, when things go sour, you just hand the kid back to the parents and they deal with it.

And for the most part, I agree with that. It’s always fun spending time with my niece, Abby, whether it’s in person or on the phone as I drive home from work. And when she gets cranky, well, that’s not my problem. Continue reading

Two Cute

4 May

Two years ago today I became an uncle, and it still qualifies as one of the happiest days of my life.

I say one of and not the happiest because since that day, as I have watched her grow up, Abby has brought me many other days of happiness.

There was the day I first saw her smile, the day she fell asleep on my chest, the days she came to visit me for the first time in Boston, the day I first saw her walking, the day I heard her say my name for the first time, and many others.

I’m sure being a parent has similar, if not greater, joys, but until then, I can’t think of anything in my life that I enjoy more than being than Abby’s uncle. Continue reading
