Nearly 31 years after the original film hit theaters, Toy Story 5 proves there’s still plenty of life left in Pixar’s signature franchise. And thank God — or Disney, anyway — for that.
This latest installment may not be the best film in the series, but it’s all relative, which means it’s still a funny, heartfelt film that speaks to both kids and adults, and it’s better than most other offerings at your local cinema right now.

Summer’s here, and the time is right for … watching movies.
If you like big blockbusters, there’s going to be plenty for you to see between now and Labor Day, including the latest (and final?) Indiana Jones adventure, the new Mission: Impossible flick, the July 21 double-feature of Barbie and Oppenheimer, and yes, Meg 2.
But before we get into all that, I wanted to recap the 20 new movies I’ve seen since my last movie-review roundup. For the record, I saw 16 of them in a theater and four via streaming. Also, I saw one movie twice, but only counted it once here. Regardless, my total for the year so far is 36.
I’ve shared my thoughts about most of what I’ve seen on Twitter and/or Instagram (Stories), and I’ve written some longer-form reviews of some of them here, but I haven’t documented my thoughts about everything. So, here in one place is a quick look at all the movies I’ve seen over the last three months, in the (reverse-chronological) order in which I saw them.

Just in case you haven’t heard, we’re now at the end of another decade. Which means it’s time to take stock not just of the year that’s closing, but the nine previous years, too, and what the major highlights and trends were.
Any decade recap in my world has to include a top-movies list. It’s a bit of a herculean task, to be sure, given that, by my math, I saw an average of 71 movies every year of this decade. (My single-year high was 85, a total I reached twice.) If all goes according to plan, I’ll close out the 2010s having seen 715 films.
That’s right: Seven hundred and fifteen films. It’s crazy, I know.
So yes, that creates a bit of a challenge when it comes to narrowing down the list to just a few “favorites.” Continue reading

Where has the year gone? I turned my head for a second and all of a sudden, we’re halfway done with 2015.
Six months in, it’s safe to say While We’re Young remains my favorite movie of 2015. But a couple releases in the past month have certainly earned themselves a place near the top of my list.

It had to happen eventually.
Pixar is the best of the best when it comes not just to animated films, but to movies in general. Its creations are true works of art: They’re gorgeously animated, innovatively designed, rich with humor and emotion, and full of characters you actually like. The movies tell wonderful stories and make impressive, subtle use of 3D. They’re as rewarding for adults as they are for kids — sometimes even more enjoyable for adults than for kids.
No wonder the company’s had an unparalleled streak of winners, going back as far as the original Toy Story film in 1995. With the exception of Cars and its sequel (which I didn’t see), nearly every other film they’ve made has been a winner: Up, Rataouille, The Incredibles, Toy Story 3, Finding Nemo, etc. … No other film studio can touch that resume.
So you might say it was only a matter of time before they put out a real stinker of a film. And now, with the release of Monsters University, they’ve done it. (Say it ain’t so!)
Disney’s latest animated film, Wreck-It Ralph, feels a lot like a mashup of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? and Toy Story by way of Tron.
Set inside the world of arcade games — 8-bit and otherwise — it tells the story of Ralph (voiced lovably by John C. Reilly), the villain of a Donkey Kong–like game called Fix-It Felix Jr. After 30 years, Ralph is in a funk. He’s grown tired of being thrown off a building over and over again, living in Felix’s shadow, and being the bad guy in a town called Niceville. “It’s tough to love your job when nobody likes you for doing it,” he tells his support group.
Wanting to prove there’s more to him than just destructive tendencies, Ralph “goes Turbo” and leaves the game, heading off to the after-hours Game Central Station where folks like Sonic the Hedgehog, Pac Man, and Q*Bert mix and mingle, and into other games, like the violent futuristic war game, Hero’s Duty. But I wanted to take just a minute to recognize his passing by recalling one of my most memorable Steve Jobs experiences.
