Good Man, That Oscar

Gotta say, I’m really happy with the Oscar nominations this year. Really quickly … Continue reading

Things You Learn in the Student Newspaper

17 Jan

I’ll admit, I’m not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to current affairs — especially those dealing with Washington, D.C. Still, I got a big laugh out of George Clooney’s joke last night at the Golden Globes about how Jack Abramoff‘s parents were cruel for naming him Jack when his last name ended with ‘off.’

I got an even bigger jolt when I flipped through the online edition of my alma mater‘s student newspaper today to learn that Abramoff was not only a fellow alumnus — he’s class of 1981 — but that he was being called “the most wretched alumnus” in the school’s history because in the nearly 25 years since he graduated, he has donated a grand total of $50 to Brandeis, and that was in 2002. I guess that’s pretty wretched (all things considered), though I can think of some worse things he could have done. I mean, at least he gave something. Does that really make him “wretched?” If this is the barometer The Justice is using, then I wonder who the second-most-wretched alumnus is. I know one thing: it’s not me.

A chunk of the movie went over my head (chalk that up to fatigue after a long day of work), but despite that, it registered loud and clear. Syriana, a searing indictment of the worldwide oil industry, is one of the most intelligent movies I’ve seen all year. A–

George Clooney Is the Man

22 Sep

I wouldn’t go so far as to say he’s a role model or even someone I idolize. He’s not even a man-crush. But George Clooney is someone I respect and admire.

It all started for me on September 2, 1997, a few days after Princess Diana died. Clooney held a press conference to call the paparazzi to task, saying it was their fault she was dead, that they were reckless, and not just in this case. The way he delivered his remarks that night — in a forceful and passionate manner, his words clearly thought-out — so impressed me that I was instantly made a fan, and I’ve never forgotten that night.

From that moment on, George Clooney was my hero. Continue reading
