Clearly, I’m in the Other 19

3 Jan

According to the Boston Globe yesterday, the number of millionaires who live in the Boston area is expected to surge 50 percent over the next five years. Specifically, this means that the number of millionaire households in the region will increase from 58,000 in 2004 to 88,000 in 2009. Apparently, one in 20 households is already a millionaire. Who knew?

The story says the increase is most likely to affect Baby Boomers, those who work at a financial services company or a law firm, or in the technology industry, and those who have numerous liquid investable assets, so I guess I’ll be staying in my current tax bracket. And something tells me the city is going to get a bit pricier to live in — never a good thing for those of us who aren’t millionaires.

Still, I’m an optimist, and I’d hate to think I’ll be left out of such a development. So I’m hoping that any day now someone is going to appear on my doorstop with a giant check à la Publishers Clearing House. It’s a good thing my apartment is clean.

A Couple More Inches

4 Dec

Just a quick plug to tell y’all that I’m in the Globe again today, in Adam Gaffin‘s “Blog Log” column. To see the mention, click here and then scroll down to “Not Again.” It’s basically the entire original posting, which was pretty short to begin with.

It’s Not Just Shannon Who Was Spoiled

10 Nov

I can’t get too upset about Shannon’s death on last night’s episode of Lost.

For starters, we’ve known for months that someone was going to die. So when the episode began and it was clear that it was a Shannon episode, and most of the hour was going to focus on her — well, duh. Clearly she’s the one who was going to die.

And there’s no real loss to the show there. Sure, Maggie Grace is hot, but ever since Boone died last year, her character had turned into a bit of a drip (when they showed her, that is). And I just didn’t buy her relationship with Sayid. Talk about convenient. Continue reading

Somebody at the Globe Likes Me …

18 Oct

Now I know I’m not writing Pulitzer Prize-level stuff here, but for the second time in three days, my blog has been quoted in the Boston Globe.

Today I’m in the “Sidekick” section writing about two movies I saw this weekend, Elizabethtown, which I hated, and Capote, which I loved. Check me out!

(Since “Sidekick” isn’t online, I scanned the quote; click on the image to see it bigger. And here’s a link to the first quote from Sunday’s paper.)

As Seen In …

16 Oct

If you’ve read the “City Weekly” section of today’s Boston Globe, maybe you’ve seen the Blog Log written by Adam Gaffin, who runs Universal Hub. And maybe you’ve seen his reference to my blog and the posting I did on my commute into work on September 30. It’s a nice plug. Thanks, Adam.

I Love L.A. (mostly)

11 Oct

Congrats to the L.A. Angels of Anaheim for knocking the Yankees out of the playoffs last night and wiping the smug demeanor off the faces of A-Rod, Randy Johnson, slimy Giambi and especially Hideki Matsui, who I was happy to see make the last out. Never has there been a bunch of ballplayers who acted like they were entitled to greatness, and I am so happy that their season is now over.

(Yes, the Sox are also out of it, and yes we got swept, but we were happy just to be in the playoffs this year. The Yankees thought they had actually earned a place in the playoffs, when they just got lucky in the end. And, at least the Sox look like they enjoy playing the game. I don’t know how anyone can enjoy watching the Yankees play when they never smile.)

Anyway … so here are my fearless predictions for the rest of the post-season, based on nothing more than who I like and who I know and who I’d enjoy rooting for:
Angels over the White Sox in 6 games
Houston over St. Louis in 6 games
Houston over the Angels in 6 games

I’m not putting any money on any of those picks and I hope the people who actually care about this stuff (hello, Todd) will take them with a grain of salt. But I think I would actually enjoy watching the World Series if it was the Astros and the Angels. Jeez, there’d be a lot of red in the stands in both parks … It might actually be like the Sox were still in it. (What? A guy can dream, can’t he?)

Why Can’t We Be Friends?

Boston’s gone baseball crazy this weekend. And some are saying the editors of the Weekly Dig — one of the free publications you’ll find all over Boston — are just plain crazy. You be the judge.

My Bad

9 Sep

If you read the posting yesterday about the Boston Herald reporter who went with me to California in June — well, not with me, but she was on the same press trip — you may have been put off by how mean spirited it was. I suppose I let my critical side get the better of me. Continue reading
