Celebrating My Double Life

7 Jun

Among MOTs, the number 18 has great significance.

The word for “life” in Hebrew is “chai” (pronounced more like “hi” than like the kind of tea). The two Hebrew letters that make up the word “chai” have the numerical values of 8 and 10, so “chai” equals 18.

As a result, on special occasions like weddings and bar/bat bitzvahs, many Jews like to give gifts in denominations of 18.

In keeping with that idea, today, on my 36th birthday, I’m celebrating double chai — or in English, my double life.

No, I’m not outing myself here as a secret agent or a superhero, or revealing some deep, dark secret about myself. I’m just saying that lately, I’ve felt like I’ve been living a bit of a double life.

Some days I’m happy as a clam, stress-free, and optimistic. A joker. A guy who likes to have a good time and make other people smile. That’s the Martin that most people see, and that I’d prefer people know me as.

But in true Gemini style, I’ve also got another side of my personality that’s, well, not those things. And too often this year I’ve felt bored, frustrated, lonely, annoyed, and just plain old down. Continue reading

Lots to Celebrate

7 Jun

It wasn’t me who coined the phrase “The Day of All Days,” but whatever you call it, the day is here again.

Today is my birthday — number 35.

Jeez, I’m getting old.

Thankfully, I don’t feel 35. And of course, I don’t act like I’m 35.

Today especially, where I’m all about attention and celebrating, just like I was when I was seven. Continue reading

I’m Gonna Go to Friendly’s

3 Jun

What better way to spend my upcoming birthday weekend (psssst … the big day is Sunday) than by enjoying some free ice cream at Friendly’s? Woo hoo! So consider this your heads up. From noon to 5 p.m. this Saturday, Friendly’s is giving out free scoops of ice cream. I’ll be there. Will you?

The Remix Gets Iced

2 Jun

I’m not one to complain about getting something for free, especially when it comes to ice cream. In fact, there are few things I get excited for more than free ice cream. So you have to assume that when the good folks at Cold Stone Creamery emailed me Sunday with a coupon for a free ice cream in honor of my birthday (which, ahem, is this Sunday), I was quite excited. That is, I was excited until I saw the coupon itself: good for a free small size original creation of my choice, i.e.: ice cream and one mix-in. One. You’d think that Cold Stone, which features a Signature Creation called Birthday Cake Remix (yum), would offer you a free cup or cone of that flavor — or at least a creation with enough mix-ins so you can make it yourself — on your birthday. Nope. Not that this is going to stop me from claiming my gift between now and June 14, when the coupon expires, but I just thought it deserved a comment.

Three for Fore

8 Jun

Birthday Fiesta 2008 continued today with brunch at Z Square in Harvard Square and then a trip up to Kimball Farm in Westford for some mini golf and ice cream. I’ll say this much about the afternoon: We started out early so as to beat the crowds and the heat, but man oh man was it hot out there. Our ice cream sure did go down easy. And just in case you’re keeping track, unlike last time (and especially because of last night’s meal), I exercised restraint, choosing a frappe instead of a sundae. It was tasty just the same. Oh, and as for the golf, chalk it up to beginner’s luck, but Jeremy beat Nina and I — though in my own defense, I’ll say he only beat me by a couple strokes, and of the three of us, I was the only one to score a hole-in-one. So maybe I’m older and possibly wiser now, but I’m no better in the mini golf department than I was. S’alright. It could be worse.

Birthday Beefy Goodness

7 Jun

NEWS FLASH: Ruth’s Chris Steak House no longer has the Chocolate Explosion cake on its menu.

Apparently, it came off six months ago (and may become a seasonal item).

After a pretty excellent birthday meal Saturday night, this had the makings of a disaster.

Thankfully, my beloved dessert has been replaced by a chocolate mousse cheesecake that, let me tell you, is so so so so sooooo good.

Sooooo, Birthday Meal 2008 was saved. Hooray! Continue reading

You Say It’s My Birthday

7 Jun

So believe it or not, my birthday seems to have snuck up on me this year. Not that I didn’t know it was coming or anything, but I just kind of let it arrive for a change, rather than hype it up and make it another Day of All Days. And that’s fine. It’s been an exciting last couple months with lots and lots of other good stuff to celebrate — buying a condo and becoming an uncle, for example — so I thought it’d be alright, for a change, to just kind of ease into my birthday this year, and not make too big of a deal about it.

Which, of course, does not mean that I won’t be doing my birthday up right. I mean, please. I’m still me. I don’t fear the birthday and I embrace more celebration. There’s a big dinner tonight, and tomorrow there’s brunch, followed by some miniature golf and ice cream, for example. And there’ll be some kind of daredevil activity at some point this summer, of course (I’m thinking whitewater rafting). Plus, the weather’s beautiful today, so that’s good too. All things considered, I think this is going to be a really nice birthday — and even more importantly, I predict good things in the year ahead. Happy 34th to me!

Here’s the Beef

11 Jun

For months and months, I’ve been teased by the ad in the Improper Bostonian for Ruth’s Chris Steak House that features a perfectly cooked filet. (It’s the one to the left.)

Just seeing the thing practically makes my mouth water (so does writing a blog post about it).

I’ve been to Ruth’s Chris a handful of times (last one was December 2005), and have always loved it.

So this year there was only one place I wanted to go with my family to celebrate my birthday. And when my juicy filet mignon arrived in front of me Saturday night, I was practically in heaven.

Holy crap, it was so good. Continue reading

I’m All Out of Love

7 Jun

Almost like a birthday present to myself, Thursday I finally finished reading Love Is a Mix Tape.

I say finally, but it only took me a month to read (which, believe it or not, is really quick for me).

As I’ve said before, I don’t read books. It’s not that I’m against the medium, but I just don’t seem to have the patience for anything longer than a typical magazine article. And maybe it’s because Mix Tape is written by Rob Sheffield, a contributing editor at Rolling Stone, but damn if I couldn’t put this book down. Continue reading

The Rhythm Came to Get Me

7 Jun

Thought I’d share what Andrew (he of the Miami bachelor party fame) and his fiancee did for me today. At around 10:30 this morning, I was told by our receptionist that I had a visitor, and when I went to the front desk there was a guy in a gorilla suit who proceeded to sing and dance his birthday wishes to me. Suffice it to say, it made an already happy birthday even happier — and it drew a lot of laughs from my coworkers. I said I wanted attention on my birthday, and Andrew sure made good on that. Nice work, my friend, but know that you’ve raised the stakes and one day I will reciprocate. The rhythm is gonna get you, too!
