Huh??

7 Oct

I had a weird thing happen last night when I got takeout from Bertucci’s. I ordered the rigatoni, broccoli and chicken, went to Kenmore Square to pick it up, got some fresh and hot rolls, etc. Then I got home, put on my “hanging out in the apartment” attire, poured myself a beverage, set the table, and got out the food. It was then that I discovered I had been given not rigatoni, broccoli and chicken but fettucini, asparagus and chicken. Huh?? Thinking I had just picked up someone else’s order, I called it in, and decided I would go back to pick up what I had actually ordered. When I got there, I asked the hostess if I had picked up someone else’s order. She said no, no one had ordered that. The kitchen was just really busy and they messed up. Now I ask you, dear readers: how busy did the kitchen have to be for them to switch two of the three ingredients in this dish and have no one notice?

Woo Hoo!!

There are many reasons to celebrate the Red Sox winning the ALDS. Here are some:

* A few days of rest for the team before the ALCS
* Beckett in Game One
* No matter who wins the Yanks-Indians series, we can say we swept round one. And we retain home field advantage.
* No game four on Monday, meaning no need to stay up late after a relaxing long weekend (the game was scheduled to start at 9:30 p.m.)
* No more listening to those awful, awful broadcasters on TBS (the American League ALCS is on Fox) or seeing those annoying Frank TV ads
* Tina Cervasio covered in champagne again
* More time for oblivious people to learn when the games are happening

Now I say, bring on the Tribe!

Get on the Train

You’ve gotta love Wes Anderson.

When he’s on, when he’s great — i.e.: Rushmore — he’s awesome.

About half of his new film, The Darjeeling Limited comes close to reaching the same comic heights of Rushmore (but in a very different way).

And the second half, well, it’s not bad, but it’s not as good either. Continue reading

A Real Fixer-Upper

6 Oct

It’s no secret that I’m a George Clooney fan, and have been for a while.

So the night that Michael Clayton opened, I was there.

And I’m happy to say, the man does not disappoint.

Here he plays — well, he’s a lawyer, but he’s the kind of guy that high-powered law firms have on staff to fix things in their clients’ favors, not necessarily to get involved in the actual law.

But Clayton’s feeling off his game lately thanks to a bad business decision and a messy divorce, and he says he’s more of a janitor, cleaning up messes.

Either way, he gets enmeshed in a case involving supposed environmental giant U/North and in assisting a colleague who is losing his grip, he finds all is not as it seems with his firm’s prized client. Continue reading

Will It Be a Cut Above?

Just wanted to say I’m totally digging the trailer for Sweeney Todd, the new Johnny Depp–Tim Burton collaboration coming to theaters this Christmas. Longtime readers of this blog know I love the show, and the film adaptation looks dark and cool, albeit less musical than the show itself (but perhaps that’s intentional for marketing purposes). I’m hoping Depp’s performance is less Jack Sparrow Gone Mad than the trailer appears, but given that he’s rockin’ another English accent, comparisons are easy to make. (HollywoodElsewhere.com says it’s Depp’s “best performance ever.”) Anyway, check out the trailer for yourself and let me know what you think.

This Movie’s Dope

If it’s November, you know it’s time to bring out the big guns. And with American Gangster you get some real big ones: Russell Crowe, Denzel Washington and director Ridley Scott.

Washington stars as Harlem drug king Frank Lucas, and Crowe is Richie Roberts, the detective working to bring him down.

Don’t be expecting a two-man show, though. This one belongs totally to Washington. I’m not usually a Denzel fan, but here he’s so cool, so charismatic, such a badass, so bigger than life, that he damn near steals the movie all for himself. How appropriate.

Not that Crowe is lacking. It’s just that by comparison, Washington has the more showy role. Continue reading

Wild, Wild West

Am I the only one out there watching Kid Nation? I hope not. I mean, I know Wednesday was game one of the ALDS, but that’s what a dual-tuner DVR is for. I’ve been waiting for this show since May, and it has not disappointed. The kids are too funny — some are earnest, others are spoiled, others are bullys, others are babies — and all say and do the darndest things. Last week they killed chickens so they could have some protein. Of course there were some who didn’t want to do that, and one locked herself in the chicken coop. In the first episode, one kid danced in the street so she could raise money to buy a bike. Tonight they were tackling sheep (!!) in a competition and were torn between a microwave and 40 pizzas as a prize. They also survived a dust storm. It’s just awesome and hysterical, and basically, if you haven’t been watching, then you’ve been missing out. Thankfully, you can catch full episodes on CBS.com or on On Demand on your cable box. For now, here’s a quick video about my favorite kid on the show, Jared, who seems to have no friends, but always has the funniest things to say. He’s totally flying under the radar as far as the other kids are concerned, but this video makes it look like he’ll eventually get his moment to shine. Do yourself a favor and watch when Kid Nation is on again next Wednesday at 8 p.m. on CBS. This may just be the best new show of the entire season.

Welcome Back, Kapler

3 Oct

What an awesome start to the playoffs for the Red Sox! Equally exciting — alright, maybe not equally — is the fact that my buddy Gabe Kapler has started a blog to document his thoughts on the team’s playoff run. Gabe’s a smart guy, and after a year as a manager down in the minors, I’m eager to see what he’ll have to say about each game. And, hopefully this’ll be another step on his road to returning to the Red Sox roster in 2008.
