My Summer 2011 To-Do List

30 May

Last week, one of my Twitter pals published her summer to-do list, and I thought to myself, “Self, that’s a great idea. Why didn’t I think of that?”

So, in the spirit of “Memorial Day is the first day of summer,” here are some things I’d like to do before the weather turns cold, in no particular order: Continue reading

It Makes Me Happy

2 Oct

When it comes to golf, my style of play is more Happy Gilmore than Tiger Woods.

There’s no grace to admire, no skill to strive for.

It’s just me, a ball, and a club that makes it go very, very far the harder I hit it.

My sport has always been softball, and if I had to pick an ideal position to play, it’d be designated hitter (which, of course, doesn’t exist in softball).

So maybe that explains why my return to the course this summer has been, shall we say, less than successful. Continue reading

Happy Summer, Y’all

Ninety-degree-plus days mean one thing to me: ice cream.

And so because my walk home through Coolidge Corner means walking right by J.P. Licks, I decided to stop for dinner on the way home (at Quiznos) so I could get some ice cream as I walked down the street.

One bad sandwich later, I got to J.P. Licks. Sort of. The line was so long that it stretched the full length of the store, out the door, and down Harvard Ave. past the entrance to the Coolidge Corner Clubhouse.

That’s a long line.

But I was determined, so I got in line and worked my way to the front. Continue reading

Under Pressure

One thing I’ve come to really like about traveling is that it gives me a couple hours to get deep into whatever book I’m reading.

(Yeah, look at me, turning into a regular bookworm.)

This weekend I flew to New York for my second cousin’s bris, and by the time I landed back in Boston Sunday night, I was more than halfway done with my new book, Cabin Pressure, by Josh Wolk. Continue reading

All Signs Point To …

25 May

Alright, so the television season is now over (and man-o-man, what an awesome Lost finale last night), there’s a brand new American Idol, the Red Sox are still in first place despite losing two out of three games to the Yankees, X-Men 3 opens tomorrow, it’s a beautiful sunny day here in Boston with temperatures in the 70s, tomorrow begins the Memorial Day weekend …

I could be wrong, but I think it’s summer! Woo hoo!

Summer Has Come and Passed

6 Sep

One thing about living where I do, because the city is so full of colleges and universities, you always know when the seasons change — for better and for worse.

Around Labor Day weekend, the flood of college students makes their presence known. They clog up the streets with their moving trucks, make the lines longer at Shaw’s, delay the T by cramming on in the morning even when there’s no space left, and other subtle things that make us locals long for winter break, when they’ll be gone again.

But it’s not just the students’ fault; all over the city, leases tend to begin on September 1, for example. So whether you like it or not, if you live in Boston, Labor Day weekend signals the official beginning of fall. Continue reading
