Go, Speed Racers, Go!

21 Apr

Living right on the marathon route has its disadvantages.

Knowing that Comm Ave would be closed at 9 a.m. today meant I had to leave New York — where I was for Passover — by 6 a.m.

Thankfully, at that hour, there’s not much traffic, so I got home around 8:30. Continue reading

Interesting

25 Mar

I must really be tapping into something here. Yesterday Boston.com and UniversalHub.com linked to me, driving more than 500 hits to this very blog. Now today, Globe critic Ty Burr is linking here from his own blog on Boston.com. I guess I must be doing something right. And thanks to someone named Brian Keaney for alerting Ty about my post.

Hi There.

24 Mar

If you’re reading this, there’s a very good chance you’ve come here from either UniversalHub.com or Boston.com, both of which have provided links to my site today.

UHub is linking to my graffiti post. The link on Boston.com (which is in the right-hand column, about halfway down the screen, under “New England Blogs”) directs you to my packing and purging post.

So if you’re new to my site, I just wanted to say “Welcome!” I hope you’ll come back often.

You Think?

Random graffiti of the day:

I saw this right off Gardner St., the street that runs parallel to Comm Ave. near Shaw’s, in Allston. It was on the wall behind the T-Mobile store.

Some neighborhoods have gang-related graffiti, others have large artwork. My neighborhood has film criticism. Hmmmmm …

Play Ball!

12 Mar

As promised, here is a link to many of my pics from my trip to Florida, where I went to three spring training games: Dodgers vs Cardinals on Friday in Vero Beach, Orioles vs Mets on Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, and Orioles vs Dodgers on Monday in Fort Lauderdale. Plenty of Nomar, Millar, Torre, Juan Pierre, and other players — if that’s what you’re into. And if it is, click here to see the photos.

Marty at Mardi Gras

5 Feb

I’ll have plenty more experiences this year, but chances are good that few will be as cool or as fun as standing on a Mardi Gras float throwing out beads to thousands of people yelling and screaming for more.

That’s exactly what I was doing Saturday night in Galveston, Texas, home of the second largest Mardi Gras celebration in the country (after the one in New Orleans, of course).

It’s estimated that 250,000 people were out along the parade route — rich, poor, black, white, young, old, etc. — and there were times when it was truly overwhelming seeing so many people cheering and clamoring for these cheap beads.

It was totally fun targeting people in the crowds and tossing beads to them. Or watching adults push past kids to grab the things. Or holding off until someone “deserved” the beads.

Man o man, was that a good time. Continue reading

Snow Day!

14 Jan

I took my camera with me to work today, so here are some snowy shots of my ‘hood. Click on each one to see a bigger version.

Last Day, First Night

31 Dec

Spent the last afternoon of 2007 wandering around downtown, checking out the pre-First Night activity. It was too warm and sunny out, so the ice sculptures weren’t all fully ready by 3pm. But I managed to get some photos of the ones that were on display. And with that, I close out this blog for 2007. To you and yours, I wish the happiest of Happy New Years. I’ll see you in ’08!

A Tale of Two Photos

23 Dec

It struck me the other day how similar these two photos are, and yet how utterly different the films they’re from — Dreamgirls and Sweeney Todd — are. Perhaps the only thing these two photos have in common is that they both capture killer performances of very different kinds. What a difference a year makes.

Winter Wonderland?

21 Dec

Thought I’d post a couple photos I took this morning in the ‘hood. They’re not quite wonder-ful, but they are snowy. What a fun weekend this is going to be, digging out my car tomorrow (finally) and seeing a lot of this snow get washed away on Sunday when it rains.
