Where in the World is Eva Longoria?

6 Apr

Here’s a good challenge: Can you find Eva Longoria using the satellite functionality of Google Maps?

Apparently, Maxim magazine, in celebration of its 100th issue, has blown up its cover from January 2005 — the one that had Eva on it — put it in the desert somewhere near Las Vegas (specifically, it’s just outside Primm, near the California state line), and if you’re that good, you can actually see it. Big Story

3 Apr

If you’re like me, you watch Grey’s Anatomy on Sunday nights at 10p.m. But maybe you’re not like me, in which case you watch Big Love on HBO at that time. And in that case, you know Ginnifer Goodwin, who stars as Margene, one of Bill Paxton’s three wives. (She was also in Walk the Line and Win a Date with Tad Hamilton!)

I had the chance to interview Ginnifer a couple months ago for Continental magazine and the article I wrote is now online. Just click here to read it. I also interviewed Ginnifer for Student Advantage Magazine and that article will be online in a couple weeks. Continue reading

Art is Art is Art … I Guess

19 Feb

There’s a truly weird photo gallery of the year’s “Great Performers” in today’s New York Times Magazine. It’s a bit disarming because this time of year, we’re so used to seeing actors and actresses photographed in what can only be called Glamour Shots, or at least ones that portray them “working.” But the photographers here are going for some bizarre looks, using body paint and other effects to create what can only be called “artsy fartsy shots.” Not sure I like many of these (Charlize Theron excepted), but they’re worth a look because they’re so startling and different.

Cover Up

7 Feb

One might think a single straight male like myself would be excited by the sight of both Keira Knightley and Scarlett Johansson posing naked on the cover of the new issue of Vanity Fair. But check out poor Keira: She’s looking rather gaunt. Yuck. I suppose Scarlett looks alright (I’ve never been a huge fan), but what would have been great was if Rachel McAdams had decided to join them. (According to reports, she refused to pose nude.) Anyway, I’m concerned for Keira. I suppose it’s not cool to make fun of unhealthy-looking thin people, but I guess I can take some degree of comfort in the fact that it’s Oscar season, and I’d imagine Keira will be attending a great many parties to celebrate her nomination for Best Actress. Let’s hope she eats something.

SAM I Am

1 Dec

A bit of self-promotion: If you’re interested, the new issue of SAM has been posted online. As you can see, this is the issue that includes my afore-mentioned interview with Jason Lee, star of (among other things) My Name Is Earl, which is one of the funniest shows on TV these days — and apparently moving to Thursdays at 9 p.m. in January.

To read the story, go to sam.com, click on “Current Issue,” and wait for the PDF to download. Continue reading

Oh No, Yoko

17 Oct

That’s it, folks. You’re looking at the best magazine cover of the last 40 years — at least according to the American Society of Magazine Editors.

You may recall that back on September 29, I posted something about ASME’s competition to select the best magazine covers of the last 40 years. Well, the winners have been chosen, and John and Yoko top the list.

If they say so.

Coming in second was the shot of Demi Moore looking large and lovely on the August 1991 cover of Vanity Fair, followed by an April 1968 photo from Esquire of boxer Muhammad Ali with arrows in his body (a cover that Radar magazine recently parodied with Tom Cruise standing in for Ali). The Saul Steinberg drawing of New York’s West Side dwarfing the rest of the country, published in The New Yorker on March 29, 1976, came in fourth. Esquire‘s May 1969 image of Andy Warhol drowning in a can of tomato soup took the fifth spot.

For the complete list of 40, click here. Of course, the famous National Geographic cover that we all know is on the list (#10 — I’d have ranked it higher), as is the cover of the first issue of JFK Jr.’s George with Cindy Crawford made up like George Washington (#22). There are three 9/11-related covers, and a five-way tie (!!) for #37 that includes Time‘s infamous “Yep, I’m Gay” cover with Ellen Degeneres and Fast Company‘s “Brand Called You” cover.

It’s a pretty interesting — though just a bit odd — group. I mean, I’d never pick the John and Yoko cover as the best cover, though it is a great one. But then again, they didn’t ask me, did they? And considering the examples I cited in my previous post, it’s probably better that they didn’t. 🙂

Now It’s My Turn

2 Oct

Alright, enough of this plugging of other people’s work.

I wrote the cover story (or, some would say, cover stories) for the October issue of Continental magazine. It’s our twice-annual Broadway special, and I interviewed Tony winners Nathan Lane (regarding his role in the new revival of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple) and Michael Cerveris (regarding his role in the new revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd). Why Can’t We Be Friends?

1 Oct

Boston’s gone baseball crazy this weekend. And some are saying the editors of the Weekly Dig — one of the free publications you’ll find all over Boston — are just plain crazy. You be the judge.

They’ve Got It Covered

29 Sep

So, this is a bit dorky (at least in comparison to some of my more recent postings), but the American Society of Magazine Editors is sponsoring a contest to pick the 40 Greatest Magazine Covers of the Last 40 Years. According to a story on the Media Industry Newsletter, the competition has attracted more than 400 entries — apparently, many of them are 9/11- or Kennedy-related.

A Picture Is Worth …

28 Sep

Alright, since I’ve already posted something about Jennifer Garner today, why not get it all out of the way and show you the picture I mentioned on Sunday of Kristin from MTV’s Laguna Beach. I’ve become a bit of a fan of the show in recent weeks, despite my best attempts to avoid it, and now this photo from the latest issue of Rolling Stone, taken by Matthew Rolston, clinches it. (It’s on page 80 of the print edition.) Enjoy. And yes, she is legal — 18 years old.

Tomorrow I’ll go back to less pervy postings. Promise.
