Now I’ve Seen Everything

13 Oct

Randomly bumped into Joe and Marie as I was walking home tonight, so we grabbed dinner at the Coolidge Corner Clubhouse and then, of course, got some dessert at J.P. Licks next door.

J.P. Licks had changed some flavors since the last time I was there, and now they have some new ones, including Chocolate Macademia, Butter Brittle, and Manischewitz Wine Sorbet.

So our eyes …. wait, what was that? Did I say Manischewitz Wine Sorbet? Yes, I did.

Needless to say, we had no interest in that. Continue reading

Free Ice Cream!

12 Sep

As an ice cream lover, there’s nothing more exciting to me than a free cone — even when the temperatures here in Boston have cooled off. So thanks to Sara for tipping me off about a free cone offer from Brigham’s. Every day from now until Sunday, just go to this site and click on the link to print your coupon. There’s a different free flavor coupon every day. Today, for example, is Vanilla. Friday is Curse Reversed. Enjoy!

Four for Fore (and More)

10 Sep

When Joe, Marie and I (and Marie’s cousin, Jenny) met up on Saturday afternoon, we had a four-item to-do list:
* lunch
* miniature golf
* bumper boats
* ice cream
Lunch was taken care of in Concord. After that, we headed to Kimball Farm in Westford, Mass. After finding parking, we grabbed our clubs and played a competitive (ha!) 18 holes of miniature golf. Thankfully, we put a four-“stroke” limit on each hole. That evened things out. Then again, I was awfully proud of my hole-in-one on one of the holes. But it was a great course, well designed, and fast-moving.

After taking a turn on the bumper boats, we endured the long lines for some ice cream. (Seriously. We must have waited about a half hour.) But it was all worth it; the ice cream was yummy and the weather couldn’t have been much better. This was the most recent stop on Joe, Marie and my Ice Cream Tour of Boston, and we had wanted to get up to Kimball Farm for more than a year. Now we can cross it off our list.

So all told, it was a nice day trip. I recommend it to anyone looking to “get away” and do something a little different. In addition to the mini golf and bumper boats at Kimball Farm, there’s also a regular golf driving range and a country store, and just a nice drive through “the country” to get up there. For the four of us, it was mission accomplished.

I Scream

17 Jul

Ladies and gentlepeople … allow me to apologize. I know you expect me to be up on all the important stuff and to pass along information that will help you live your lives better (he said, with all due sarcasm — as if you couldn’t tell). Well, I’ve let you down. So allow me to correct that mistake right here.

Sunday was National Ice Cream Day. Apparently, this holiday — and it is a holiday, as far as I’m concerned — always falls on the third Sunday in July. (Who knew? Not me.) Given the fact that it’s so unbearably hot here in Boston and elsewhere around the country, I suspect no one really needed an excuse to eat ice cream. Still, I feel bad about not posting something about this exciting holiday sooner.

SO, I am happy to announce that the entire month of July is National Ice Cream Month, according to the International Dairy Foods Association and the International Ice Cream Association. And, believe it or not, for this we also have Ronald Reagan to thank. (Seriously.) Should you care to celebrate by doing some reading about the history of ice cream, simply click here.

And there you have it. Now go out and grab yourself a cone or something. If you’re in the Boston area, head on out to Belmont for some Rancatore’s (I recommend the Hydrox or, if they have it, Cocoa Joel). If not, Edy’s will more than suffice (I love their Light Mint Chocolate Chip). Either way, stay cool … and enjoy.

The Coolest Day of the Year

24 Apr

Forget Christmas, just for a day. Tomorrow, April 25, is the annual free cone day at Ben & Jerry’s, or as I like to call it, the most wonderful day of the year. That means even though the temperature is in the 50s, you are obligated to go to your local scoop shop and grab yourself some free Phish Food or Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. If you’re like me, you can go from store to store grabbing a different scoop at each shop. (Don’t worry, I’m not really going to do that.) Baskin Robbins usually has their free cone night the day after, but there’s nothing on their web site yet. Stay tuned. When I know, you’ll know.

I Ate, I Screamed

27 Mar

It’s just past lunchtime on Monday and I can safely say I am finally ready to eat again.

Joe, Marie and I resumed our Ice Cream Tour of Boston yesterday by heading to Celebrity Pizza in Watertown. But it was closed (until “springtime,” whenever that is), so we headed back over to Cabot’s in Newton. Yum. Of course, this was also a lunch plan, so we all had “real” food first. And after a cheeseburger and fries I was pretty well sated, but I went ahead and ordered a sundae anyway. (A “regular” sundae, which I learned was not a small but a larger size. Ooops.) Mint Oreo ice cream, chocolate mellowcreme fudge, marshmallow fluff … and what the hell, sprinkles too. Mmmmmm … And if you’ve been to Cabot’s, you know they make some of the best, messiest sundaes ever. (That’s the marshmallow dripping off the right side there.)

Well, I took one look at that thing and was stuffed already. But onward I trudged, digging my spoon in repeatedly and doing my best to eat as much as I could. At one point, as I struggled, Joe (who had simply ordered apple pie a la mode) offered this wisdom: “You go to lunch with the appetite you have, not the appetite you want.” With that, I put down my spoon. Joe was right and I was done. And for those who keep track of such things, I had barely eaten half.

After we separated, I had intended to go to the movies or, at the least, to Shaw’s to do my weekly grocery shopping. But I was so stuffed that I sat like a stone and aside from pacing around my apartment, barely moved. I never even ate dinner. When I woke up this morning, I was still not very hungry. But now, I think I’m ready to eat again …

… If only I had time to eat today.

(And thanks to Marie for documenting that monstrous sundae, and my happy reaction before I got too far into eating the sucker.)
